The Department of Energy (DOE) has intensified its renewable energy and energy efficiency campaign in Western Visayas after Energy Secretary Sharon Garin led the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with local government units across Panay Island, Iloilo City, and Megaworld Corporation.
The partnership supports the implementation of the Solar Solutions for Government: Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency in Program Buildings, a flagship initiative that promotes the adoption of solar power and energy-efficient technologies in government facilities.
The MOA signing also marked the regional launch of the Oras Natin Efficiency Campaign, the DOE’s nationwide initiative encouraging households, businesses, and government offices to conserve electricity through simple energy-saving practices.
Under the campaign, Filipinos are encouraged to unplug and switch off non-essential lights, appliances, and electronic devices every Saturday from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m., a collective effort aimed at reducing electricity consumption and easing pressure on the country’s power supply.
“Every Filipino can make a difference. Conserving energy is not only about reducing expenses, it is also about protecting our environment and contributing to nation-building,” Garin said.
She emphasized that even small actions can translate into lower electricity bills, reduced energy demand, improved environmental protection, and enhanced national energy security.
Garin also called on local government units to champion energy conservation programs in their communities and incorporate sustainable energy practices into local governance and public service.
A key partner in the initiative, Megaworld Corporation, reaffirmed its commitment to the government’s clean energy agenda by expanding the installation of solar power systems across its developments and implementing additional energy-efficiency measures.
The DOE said the partnership highlights the vital role of collaboration between government and the private sector in accelerating the country’s transition to renewable energy while promoting responsible and sustainable energy consumption.IMT
