Grid alerts returned to the Visayas Grid on October 15 as available electricity supply tightened against demand, according to the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP).

Despite the alerts, no major power interruptions or manual load dropping were reported, said Reagahn Alcantara, an officer of the NGCP Public Relations Department.

Alcantara attributed the tighter supply partly to the resumption of scheduled preventive maintenance at power plants, which had deferred such activities from May to September. Some generating facilities also experienced unscheduled outages, further affecting available electricity supply.

Several power plants have since returned to service, including Therma Visayas Inc. (TVI) Units 1 and 2 in Cebu, which resumed operations in September.

The power sector is now awaiting the return to normal operations of Panay Energy Development Corp. (PEDC) Unit 3, which is expected to come back online in the coming days or weeks.

Alcantara said the NGCP continues to monitor grid conditions and hopes that the power supply situation will improve in the coming days or weeks.IMT
