Iloilo City has allocated P25 million from its local disaster risk reduction and management fund for the installation of solar energy systems in select sites.
Mayor Raisa Treñas said in an interview Monday, July 27, the city government is looking into specific projects for installation of solar panels.
“The P25 million is already the budget allotted for our solar systems installation in the evacuation center, emergency operations center and government offices. That is our initiative for upgrading, for renewable, also we are looking into one of the initiatives for this (energy) crisis,” she said.
The mayor said some offices can save about 30 percent to 40 percent electricity charges from the installation of solar panels.
Treñas was one of the local chief executives who signed an agreement with the Department of Energy, expressing support for the Solar Solutions for Government: Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy in Public Buildings Program.
During the signing, the mayor said the local government would expand the use of solar in streetlights across the city, reducing energy consumption and carbon emissions.
“By investing in renewable energy today, we are creating long-term savings, strengthening energy security, and building a city that is more resilient to the challenges of tomorrow,” she said.PNA
