Age doesn’t matter!
At 56 years old, an Ilongga martial artist proved her supremacy after winning three gold medals in the 6th Doce Pares World Arnis Championship Tournament at the City Mall Bacalso Activity Area in Cebu City.
Unstoppable, Ilongga Maria Lucy U. Muralla, who is an Arnis Blackbelt Dan 1,t ruled three Anyo (forms) events: double espada, espada y daga, and solo espada.
“I joined the competition not just for myself. Aside from my advocacy on mental and physical health, learning Arnis martial arts is our only Filipino Sport. Learning this is patriotism, a manifestation of love for our country and culture,” Muralla shared.
The three-time gold medalist also told IMT NEWS that her competition also aims to inspire women out there who feel hopeless and depressed that in whatever age you are right now, it is not too late to achieve your dreams and find your purpose.
“I am 56, the first woman in the history of world Arnis federation so far to have joined. I value focus, perseverance, determination, and faith, a deep belief that God shall always bring justice and help even when the situation fosters doubt and despair can bring you to the achievement of your goal.
She amazed more than 300 athletes from around 10 countries as she competed against younger opponents. Following her sterling performance, Muralla received the awards from World Eskrima Arnis Federation President Steve Wolk and Doce Pares Founder Supreme Grandmaster Dionisio Canete.
With the feat, Muralla underscored the cultural significance of Arnis, also known as Eskrima, describing it as a reflection of Filipino identity and heritage.
Coached by Master Nilo Sara and the influence of Grandmaster Melecio Balberde, Muralla defied all odds, proving that she can pull off a win against younger athletes.IMT Sports
