Metro Pacific Iloilo Water (MPIW) is targeting to replace more than 45 kilometers of old, leaky pipes in various locations within Iloilo City by the first quarter of 2026 to upgrade the distribution system and reduce water losses.
The company has allocated around P1.3 billion for the replacement of these deteriorated pipelines, which are located in portions of Mandurriao, Jaro, La Paz, and Lapuz. These projects are part of MPIW’s P11 Billion total spending plan for 2025 – 2028, which includes the planned Desalination Facility and Modular Desalination, both of which will be integrated into MPIW’s distribution system once operational.
“We are committed to investing in our infrastructure to continuously improve our services. Our goal is to provide 100% of our service area with a 24-hour supply at appropriate water pressure,” said Metro Pacific Iloilo Water Chief Operating Officer Angelo David C. Berba
Once completed, these pipe replacements—along with MPIW’s leak repair and network diagnostic activities—will allow for the recovery of some 20-30 MLD (million liters per day) of water, which is enough to supply the water needs of almost 30,000 residents.
These projects are coming online between 2025 and 2026: HS Jaro Project Phase 1 and 2, recovering 10 million liters per day (MLD) by December 2025; Q Abeto – R. Mapa, Iloilo City Proper Phase 2, Bo. Obrero, Mansay Lapuz, and Sinikway are all Total Pipe Replacement Projects with a significant impact on increasing water availability.
“These initiatives are not instantaneous solutions. We are correcting infrastructure challenges that span generations—something that cannot be reversed overnight,” Berba added
Since taking over operations in 2019, MPIW has managed to decrease NRW from around 60 percent to 47 percent and is targeting a further reduction to 35 percent by the end of 2027. This translates to a projected recovery of 15 to 20 million liters per day of productive water.
It has rehabilitated and replaced over 27,000 meters of old, leak-prone pipelines, with an additional 40,000 meters currently being installed. Service connections have increased by roughly 20 percent, benefiting over 50,000 households directly.
The company reaffirmed its commitment to water security in Iloilo City and neighboring municipalities, citing over P4.2 billion in verified infrastructure investments since entering into a joint venture with the Metro Iloilo Water District (MIWD) in July 2019.
