More than a hundred families were affected by a possible tornado that swept through parts of Iloilo City on Saturday night, Aug. 8.
The Iloilo City Emergency Operation Center’s latest situation report showed that a total of 144 families, equivalent to 568 individuals, were displaced.
The affected families were from 12 barangays in the districts of Jaro (8), Mandurriao (3), and La Paz (1).
Barangay Cubay recorded the highest number of affected families with 60, followed by CC-EL, 17; Q. Abeto, 16; and Calubihan, 10.
Meanwhile, a total of five houses were totally destroyed and 67 were partially damaged.
The totally destroyed houses were recorded in Barangays Cubay, Tabuc Suba, Gustillo, Q. Abeto, and Taft North.
The possible tornado also uprooted and toppled trees and knocked down utility posts, causing temporary road obstructions and power interruptions.
The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has yet to confirm whether it was really a tornado or “buhawi.”
According to the state weather bureau tornadoes are “funnel-shaped rotating columns of air that pass on a narrow path over land.”IMT
