Malacañang said it was proper for the International Criminal Court (ICC) to call out former lawyer Nicholas Kaufman over his public remarks on former President Rodrigo Duterte’s crimes against humanity case.

Palace Press Officer Claire Castro said the ICC’s warning highlights concerns over the spread of fake news surrounding the proceedings.

“Naging makabuluhan po ang ipinahayag ng ICC dahil nakita po natin na hindi lamang po tayo ang nakakakita at nakakapansin ng pagkalat ng fake news,” Castro said.

She added that Kaufman’s statements were baseless and appeared to be aimed at attacking the government rather than helping his client’s defense.

Kaufman withdrew as Duterte’s lawyer in May and was later replaced by Peter Haynes.IMT
