President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. wants Filipino teachers to produce students who can think critically, make sound decisions and distinguish what is true and important in an increasingly technology-driven world.
Marcos Jr. made the call Wednesday as he underscored the continuing importance of teachers despite the rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI).
“I implore you to help shape learners to become critical thinkers who question, discern, make sound decisions and at the same time remaining compassionate and mindful of others,” Marcos said during the National Teachers’ Month 2026 celebration.
He said the country needs young Filipinos who can eventually lead communities and institutions “with wisdom, competence, and with empathy.”
Marcos Jr. acknowledged that the government has made progress in improving Philippine education, citing the latest Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) results as a reason for optimism.
But he also pointed to continuing problems in teacher preparation, including the assignment of teachers to subjects outside their specialization and training that does not always match classroom realities.
The President also stressed that teachers perform roles beyond delivering lessons, saying many serve as second parents who help create safe and supportive learning environments.
He said AI and other technologies may change how children learn but cannot replace teachers who guide students in determining what is true, important and right.
During the event, Marcos Jr. also led the ceremonial activation of the My Teacher Education Commons Portal, a digital platform being developed to support continuous professional learning and teacher development.IMT
