The Public Safety and Transportation Management Office (PSTMO) has proposed to build an underpass beneath Bonifacio Drive in Iloilo City.

PSTMO head Jeck Conlu said he believed that the proposed underpass would be a big help to reduce traffic congestion in the area.

Specifically, the underpass is intended for pedestrians crossing from the Iloilo Provincial Capitol to the Casa Plaza building and vice versa.

Bonifacio Drive is one of the areas in the city that are heavily congested during rush hours.

Conlu said he already presented his proposal to the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).

“We’re just waiting for their feedback.”

The PSTMO head also shared his proposal with Metro Manila Development Authority (DPWH) personnel who assessed the city’s traffic situation recently.

Conlu said every day, more than a thousand people, based on the results of a study conducted by MMDA, are crossing the pedestrian lane between the capitol and Casa Plaza.

This number of pedestrians, according to Conlu, contributes to the congestion.

He said an underpass is better than an overpass because the latter would be obstructing the view of the capitol.IMT
