The Senate on Monday, Sept. 7, approved five international agreements covering aviation security, criminal justice, space activities, higher education and taxation.
The chamber approved Senate Resolution Nos. 622, 624, 625, 626 and 628 during its plenary session.
Senate Resolution No. 622 covers the Philippines’ accession to the Protocol to Amend the Convention on Offences and Certain Other Acts Committed on Board Aircraft.
The agreement strengthens the legal framework for dealing with offenses committed aboard aircraft and other aviation security concerns.
Senate Resolution No. 624 covers the Philippine-India Treaty on Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters, which provides a framework for cooperation in investigating, prosecuting and preventing crimes.
The Senate also approved Resolution No. 625, concurring in the ratification of the Convention on International Liability for Damage Caused by Space Objects.
The convention provides a mechanism for the Philippines to seek compensation for damage caused by space objects launched by other states. It also sets rules on liability for space-related activities.
Resolution No. 626 covers the Philippines’ accession to the Asia-Pacific Regional Convention on the Recognition of Qualifications in Higher Education.
The agreement is intended to make it easier for Filipino graduates and professionals to have their qualifications recognized in other Asia-Pacific countries.
The Senate likewise approved Resolution No. 628, concurring in the ratification of the Philippines-Cambodia Agreement on the Elimination of Double Taxation and the Prevention of Fiscal Evasion with respect to Taxes on Income.
The agreement seeks to prevent individuals and businesses engaged in cross-border activities from being taxed twice on the same income.
The five resolutions now advance the Philippines’ participation in international agreements involving legal cooperation, education, taxation, aviation and space activities.IMT
