Iloilo City and other parts of Western Visayas are expected to experience the effects of Super El Niño beginning in October, with below-normal rainfall, drought, dry spells and possible water shortages among the anticipated impacts.

PAGASA Iloilo weather specialist Engr. Ferdinand Rubin said during a scientific forum organized by the Iloilo City Government that the strongest effects of El Niño are expected from October to December this year.

The region, according to him, is gradually transitioning toward El Niño as the southwest monsoon weakens.

Based on the regional rainfall outlook, all five provinces in Western Visayas were expected to experience below-normal rainfall in September, raising concerns over water availability and agricultural conditions in the coming months.

Rubin also warned that rising temperatures could increase demand for air-conditioning and other cooling equipment, potentially placing additional pressure on electricity demand.

The weather specialist emphasized the need for stronger coordination among local government units across Western Visayas to prepare for the anticipated effects of the climate phenomenon.

City Mayor Raisa Treñas said preparations should begin early to help communities manage the potential impacts of Super El Niño.

Treñas pushed for the two-day scientific forum organized by the Iloilo City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, bringing together technical experts, scientists, private-sector representatives and other stakeholders to discuss preparedness measures.IMT
