Iloilo City Mayor Raisa Treñas wants public transport modernization to do more than put newer buses and jeepneys on the road. She wants commuters to spend less time in traffic and more time with their families.
“Imagine the number of hours we spend stuck in traffic instead of spending quality time with our loved ones,”
Treñas said in a statement posted on her Facebook page ahead of the Iloilo City Public Transport Modernization Convention on October 13.
“A better transport system means shorter travel times, safer and more convenient commutes, less stress, and more time for our families.”
She said public transportation should focus on people and their families, not just vehicles and income.
As an economic and educational hub, Iloilo City records more than 185,000 public transport passenger trips on weekdays, underscoring the need for a more efficient, accessible and reliable system.
Treñas met with World Bank Group Senior Transport Specialist Bowen Wang and Department of Transportation Assistant Secretary Dioscoro “Jojo” Reyes on Monday to discuss the next phase of public transport modernization.
She said the goal should go beyond modernizing buses and jeepneys to making daily commutes safer, more convenient and less stressful for Ilonggos.
