Tubungan has stood out as the only municipality in the province of Iloilo where all households in its 48 barangays are equipped with proper toilet facilities.
The Department of Health (DOH) granted Tubungan full Grade 2 (G2) sanitation certification, making it the first among the province’s 43 local government units (LGUs) to meet all requirements under the Philippine Approach to Sustainable Sanitation.
The achievement was highlighted during the Biyaheng G2 Para sa Limpyo Iloilo Summit 2026, which brought together LGUs and sanitation workers to promote proper sanitation and healthier communities in the province.
At present, a total of 103 barangays in the province have earned G2 certification.
“I am happy to say nga may ara na kita 103 ka barangays. Bisan amo na ka tedious kag amo na ka budlay ang mga proseso nga ila gin-agi-an, nakapasar sila,” said Provincial Health Office head Dr. Maria Socorro Quiñon.
To achieve G2 status, municipalities or barangays must eliminate open human waste disposal, ensure all households have their own toilets, and maintain sanitary standards in public facilities.
Dr. Rodney Labis, head of the IPHO Health Service Delivery Division, said they target G2 certification for all LGUs by 2028.
The provincial government, according to him, has allocated an annual budget of P5 million for the purchase of toilet bowls and construction materials.IMT
