Senator Joel Villanueva has welcomed the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) proposal to adopt flexible loan terms based on a borrower’s capacity to pay, calling it a fair and long-awaited reform.
“Masasabi po natin na patas ang ganitong hakbang… matagal na rin po ang ating hinintay para ipatupad ito ng BSP,” he said, noting the shift away from fixed loan limits toward borrower-based assessment.
The proposal allows banks to set repayment terms based on creditworthiness, repayment history, and loan purpose, instead of strict timelines.
Villanueva said the move reflects the growing financial strain on Filipinos, citing the GSIS loan moratorium and the SSS plan to study similar relief measures.
However, he urged faster action, especially from SSS.
“Huwag pag-antayin nang matagal ang 40 milyong miyembro nito… hindi po kathang-isip ang problema natin ngayon,” he stressed, calling for immediate and coordinated relief.IMT
