The Police Regional Office (PRO-6) arrested 105 violators and confiscated more than P6.2 million worth of illegal fishing gear and aquatic catch from June 22 to 28.
The intensive operations, dubbed “Birada Semana,” aimed to protect Western Visayas’ rich marine ecosystems and enforce strict compliance with national and local fishery laws.
The region-wide operations yielded illegal fishing paraphernalia valued at P6,018,250, and assorted fish species with an estimated market value of P257,630.
The accomplishment was the result of 65 highly targeted anti-illegal fishing operations carried out by various local police units in close coordination with partner law enforcement agencies and local government units (LGUs).
The Aklan Police Provincial Office (AkPPO) led the region with the highest number of apprehensions, capturing 58 violators.
The Antique Police Provincial Office came in second with 20 arrests, while Capiz recorded 14.
Other provincial and city police units throughout Western Visayas also logged key arrests and seizures, contributing to the campaign’s overall success.
The arrested suspects are currently in police custody and will face appropriate criminal charges for violating the Philippine Fisheries Code and other relevant environmental laws.
Police Brigadier General Randulf T. Tuaño, PRO-6 acting regional director, commended the operating units for their focus and dedication to protecting the region’s municipal waters and marine biodiversity.
“Illegal fishing threatens not only our marine biodiversity but also the livelihood and food security of thousands of fisherfolk who depend on our coastal waters,” he said.IMT
