Student-athletes from West Visayas State University showed dominating performances in the just-concluded 2020 Regional State Colleges and Universities Athletic Association (SCUAA) held in Talisay, Negros Occidental.

The team from Iloilo bagged the championship titles in men’s and women’s taekwondo, arnis, and women’s basketball.

The victory gave WVSU their sixth straight taekwondo championship and seven-peat in the Regional SCUAA meet.

In the women’s category, the WVSU jins collected a total of 11 medals, five gold, four silver, and two bronze medals ahead of ISAT-U who grabbed four gold, one silver, and two bronze medals.

Central Philippines State University (CPSU) ranked third with two gold, one silver, and three bronze medals, while Aklan State University (ASU) settled for a fourth place finish with two gold and one silver medals.

The team’s taekwondo men also proved supreme after collecting five gold and three bronze medals. University of Antique (UA) is at second with four gold, two silver, and one bronze medals.

Meanwhile, WVSU’s women’s arnis posted a seven-peat victory at the Carlos Hilado Memorial State College. The team ruled the gold medals in the traditional solo, doble, open form, team doble and team open form, as well as in team anyo’s team solo and team doble and in non-traditional’s open form.

The WVSU women’s arnis also finished with silver in non-traditional solo and team anyo’s team open form, and bronze medal in non-traditional’s doble.

In the men’s category, WVSU settled for second runner-up with two gold, two silver and six bronze medals. The men’s arnis gold medal were from non-traditional solo and traditional team solo, while the silver medal were from non-traditional doble and traditional open form

The team bagged six bronze medals from non-traditional open from, team anyo’s team solo, team doble and team open form and traditional’s solo and doble.

In addition, it was a memorable victory for the WVSU women’s basketball after upsetting Northen Iloilo Polytechnic State College (NIPSC) in a scintillating finals, 51-50.

But WVSU failed to replicate their victory after NIPSC successfully defended their crown in the men’s basketball for 10 years already.

The Northern Iloilo shooters blasted UA, 83-74. Despite the sharp shooters and bigger line up of UA, NIPSC was able to stop the assault through their strong and systematic Defense and well coordinated offense.

“NIPSC maintained their momentum in the last five minutes of the game, but the long shots of UA brought the game to overtime, but NIPSC ran away the offense and taken its bite for a strong defense system. They practically brought UA to a complete halt, winning the game straight from 2010 to 2020,” shared NIPSC team manager Atty. James Balsomo II. IMT
