Students from Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) households will be given top priority in receiving Tertiary Education Subsidy (TES) under a proposed amendment to the Universal Access to Quality Tertiary Education Act.

The measure was approved by the Bicameral Conference Committee and seeks to ensure that more poor students benefit from government education assistance.

EDCOM 2 said data showed that fewer beneficiaries of TES now come from the poorest households compared to previous years.

“The commitment, the promise to the Filipino poor but deserving students especially those in the 4Ps program is but an illusion. P20,000 a year is impossible to make. So unahin muna natin sana yung 4Ps to be able to give them a PES amount sufficient to be able to finish a year,” said Rep. Roman Romulo.

The bill also includes a Private Education Assistance program that would provide government support to students enrolled in private higher education institutions and technical-vocational schools.IMT
