Senate Minority Leader Alan Peter Cayetano has urged lawyers to focus on purpose and faith rather than status and big-name clients.
Speaking at the blessing of a new law office on April 15, Cayetano said the legal profession should be guided by a deeper calling.
“Don’t seek VIPs (very important persons). Seek very important believers – VIBs, not VIPs. Don’t seek those big cases, those big clients, et cetera. Just seek God’s righteousness and his kingdom,” he said.
He stressed that success will follow if lawyers prioritize purpose, not prestige or high-profile cases.
Cayetano also said many of the country’s problems go beyond law and politics.
“Our problem is not legal. Our problem is not political. There’s an oil crisis, but our problem is not just economic or financial. Our problem is [also] spiritual,” he added.
He encouraged lawyers to stay grounded in their values, saying: “Be the salt and light in everything.”IMT
