A commercial fishing vessel was apprehended for allegedly using the prohibited “hulbot-hulbot” fishing method in the waters off Concepcion, Iloilo.
The apprehension was carried out Monday night, Oct. 5, by the Iloilo Provincial Bantay Dagat Task Force in coordination with the Regional Intelligence Unit 6.
Patrolling personnel spotted the vessel actively fishing using a Danish seine, locally known as “hulbot-hulbot,” in the waters off Barangay Malangabang.
Authorities said the use of the fishing method violates Section 97 of Republic Act 10654 and Fisheries Administrative Order 246-1.
The vessel operator was identified as alias Rowel, a resident of San Remigio, Cebu.
Authorities estimated the vessel’s value at P4 million and its fishing gear at P500,000. Fifteen banyeras of assorted fish, valued at about P50,000, were also confiscated.
The vessel, fishing gear and catch remain under government custody as authorities prepare to file administrative and criminal charges.IMT
