Gilas Pilipinas suffered a heartbreaking 106-102 double-overtime defeat to New Zealand in the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup Asian Qualifiers at Spark Arena in Auckland, as crucial errors in crunch time proved costly and denied the Filipinos a crucial road victory.
The Filipinos fought hard repeatedly through second overtime in a thriller contest, but untimely turnovers and missed opportunities in the closing moments allowed New Zealand to pull away and secure the win.
Juan Gomez de Liaño and Kevin Quiambao spearheaded the Gilas attack by firing 23 points apiece, keeping the national team within striking distance and trading spectacular clutch shots across the extra periods.
Naturalized star player Justin Brownlee, however, was limited to just five points as the suffocating defense of the Tall Blacks effectively neutralized the veteran forward throughout the contest before he exited late after being called for an unsportsmanlike foul.
Head coach Tim Cone lamented the team’s self-inflicted mistakes, pointing to missed free throws, untimely turnovers, and unnecessary fouls that ultimately spoiled what could have been one of Gilas’ biggest wins in the qualifiers.
Despite the loss, Gilas displayed resilience and matched the Tall Blacks throughout one of their toughest games of the qualifiers.
The loss dropped Gilas to 2-3 in Group A, while New Zealand improved to 3-2. The Philippines has already advanced to the second round, with its record carrying over, and will face Australia in Perth on July 6 to close out the first round. Pia Maleriado, WVSU-COC Intern/IMT
