In a major move to bolster the local education sector, Mayor Raisa Treñas has announced that 51 out of 66 public schools in Iloilo City are set to receive targeted infrastructure projects and support services.
Funded through the city’s Special Education Fund (SEF), the projects and services are designed to directly address the specific needs of students and teachers across the metropolis.
During a recent meeting with the Iloilo City Local School Board, Treñas highlighted the direct link between local taxes and educational improvements.
The mayor explained that for every P100 paid by citizens in Real Property Tax (RPT), P33 is automatically allocated to the SEF.
These funds are strictly utilized for the construction of new classrooms, essential building repairs, upgrading school facilities, and comprehensive student support programs.
A key highlight of this year’s allocation is the “bottom-up” approach to development.
Following a commitment made by the mayor last year to ensure no school in Iloilo City is neglected, school principals were personally called to identify and choose their own priority projects.
By allowing those on the front lines to decide, the Treñas administration ensures that the budget targets the most urgent requirements of each campus.
Moreover, Treñas secured funding for the provision of school supplies for the School Year 2026–2027, aiming to ensure that every Ilonggo student is fully prepared and equipped the moment classes resume.
“These initiatives demonstrate that your taxes go directly to where they are needed most—for a better learning environment and a higher quality of education for our children,” Treñas stated.IMT
