The Iloilo City Government and the Department of Education (DepEd) have formalized a partnership aimed at addressing the shortage of classrooms in public schools, a move expected to ease overcrowding and eventually eliminate shifting schedules in several learning institutions.
Mayor Raisa S. Treñas announced that the city recently signed a memorandum of agreement (MOA) with DepEd for the construction of additional classroom buildings, describing the initiative as a major step toward improving the quality of education in Iloilo City.
In an interview, Treñas said the project responds to the growing need for more learning spaces in schools experiencing high student-to-classroom ratios.
“This is a significant development for Iloilo City, especially since several schools continue to face a shortage of classrooms. Some institutions still have high student populations relative to available learning spaces, while others remain on shifting schedules,” the mayor said.
Under the agreement, DepEd will provide funding for the construction of new classroom buildings, with the number of classrooms to be built depending on the amount of funds released to the local government.
Treñas said preparations are underway, and construction could begin as early as the third quarter of the year once the building designs receive final approval from DepEd.
The mayor expressed optimism that some of the new facilities could be completed in time for the next school year.
The lack of classrooms, she noted, has forced some schools to shorten instructional periods, reducing class time from the standard one hour to as little as 45 minutes.
“With additional classrooms, we can gradually phase out shifting schedules, restore regular class periods, and maximize the quality of education we provide to our students,” the mayor said.
Treñas also assured parents, teachers, and learners that education remains among the top priorities of her administration.
“We continue to invest in the education of our children because we believe that quality education opens opportunities, uplifts families, and helps secure a better future for the next generation,” she added.
The city government said the partnership reflects its continuing commitment to strengthening public education and creating a more conducive learning environment for Ilonggo students.IMT
