In a strong push for public safety and disaster preparedness, the Iloilo City Government launched the “Creek Cleaning Oplan Kontra Baha” initiative in Barangay Ticud, La Paz district.

The city government partnered with the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE-6) and the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH-6) to implement this proactive measure aimed at clearing vital waterways and protecting local communities from inundation.

Mayor Raisa Treñas led the launch. She was joined by key officials from partner agencies, including engineer Johny Pura of the Iloilo City District Engineering Office, DPWH-66 assistant regional director Recardo Gutierez, DOLE-6 regional director Atty. Sixto Rodriguez, and Police Colonel Alladin Dingal of the Police Regional Office (PRO-6).

“Ini nga proyekto indi lamang clean-up activity kundi isa ka investment sa public safety, environmental protection, kag disaster preparedness sang aton siyudad,” Treñas said, highlighting the city’s strategic approach to the issue.

The initiative leverages the DOLE Tulong Panghanapbuhay sa Ating Disadvantaged/Displaced Workers (TUPAD) program to employ 70 residents from seven Iloilo City barangays: Banuyao, Baldoza, Caingin, Hinactacan, Tabuc Suba, Ingore, and Ticud.

The beneficiaries are tasked with clearing waterways stretching from Hinactacan to Ticud in La Paz, and Ticud to Tabuc Suba in Jaro, ensuring proper water flow.

Treñas emphasized that maintaining these channels is critical for the city, noting that clogged waterways often cause flooding even during minor rainfall. By clearing them, the city government aims to significantly reduce the risk of severe flooding during strong typhoons.

Looking beyond the initial 31-day phase of the project, the mayor outlined the city government’s broader vision.

Treñas revealed plans to expand the waterway clearing operations to other districts, with a particular focus on Molo and Jaro, demonstrating the city’s long-term commitment to flood control.

“This project, in partnership with DOLE and DPWH, reminds us nga kon matinluan naton ang aton ugsaran, kita man mismo ang makabenepisyo,” she said.

Treñas praised the strong collaboration between the city, the partner national agencies, barangay officials, and community leaders.

She stressed that such partnerships are crucial for effectively addressing issues that impact Ilonggos.

The mayor also called on the public to support the city government’s efforts by practicing responsible waste disposal and active community participation to build a cleaner, safer, and more flood-resilient city.IMT
