A new learning space was officially opened at the Iloilo Central Public Market on Friday, Aug. 28.
The Library sa Merkado is the city government’s first library inside a public market.
The opening was led by Mayor Raisa Treñas together with learners from the ECCD Centers of Iloilo City.
In her message, Treñas emphasized the importance of nurturing a love for reading to strengthen the literacy and reading comprehension of children as they grow up.
“We want to start them young and help them discover that reading can be fun. If they start at an early age, they would enjoy learning and would not have problems with reading comprehension,” she said.
The market-based library was made possible through a donation by the Zonta Club of Iloilo City Inc., with construction assistance provided by the Technical Institute of Iloilo City.
Located in the dry goods section on the second floor, the facility is open during weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.IMT
