Iloilo City is preparing for possible water shortages and flooding as the country braces for the possible effects of Super El Niño.

Mayor Raisa Treñas said the city has already identified areas that could experience water shortages so preparations can be made before the effects of the weather phenomenon are felt.

“Especially sa aton nga gina forecast na super El Niño, we have to be ready. May na-identify naman kita, pila ka barangays ang maka-experience sang water shortage, kag may mga areas na madulaan sang tubig, i-identify natin and we have to be ready,” she said.

The city has also prepared static water tanks, with some already deployed in several barangays to serve as an additional water supply.

Treñas said the city is also preparing for possible flooding, noting that El Niño does not necessarily mean there will only be extreme heat.

“Ongoing man ang aton mga declogging efforts. Ang aton mga pumping stations, gina-ready man naton in case there is flash floods nga gina-expectar natin, everything will be operational,” she said.

Treñas said the city needs to prepare for intermittent rains and possible flash floods, aside from the expected water shortage.

“We have to be prepared so that if we know what we are expecting, makapreparar kita sa mga kilanlanon naton,” she said.

The city government is also preparing a summary of the findings from a two-day scientific forum, which will be used in developing action plans for the possible effects of Super El Niño.IMT
