Senate President Pro Tempore Panfilo Lacson said he will oppose and vote against any move to stop or delay the Senate from convening as an impeachment court for the possible trial of Vice President Sara Duterte.
Lacson stressed that convening the Senate as an impeachment court is a constitutional duty and should not be mistaken as a vote to convict or acquit Duterte.
He said the Senate, as a collegial body, will still follow the decision of the majority if such a motion is raised.
The senator also noted that the issue could reach the Supreme Court of the Philippines, which may compel the Senate to fulfill its constitutional duty.
Lacson maintained that evidence alone will guide his decision if the impeachment trial pushes through.
The senator also warned that senators pushing to block the Senate from convening would have to explain their actions to the public.
“If that happens, it’s on them. They must explain to the people why they don’t want the Senate to convene into an impeachment court,” Lacson said.IMT
