President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has ordered government agencies to remain on heightened alert as the southwest monsoon or Habagat continues to bring heavy rains to several parts of the country.
Malacañang said Marcos Jr. is closely monitoring the situation, especially in areas prone to flooding and communities near dams where water levels are rising.
The President also ordered government agencies to coordinate the release of water from dams to help prevent flooding in communities downstream.
“The President is closely monitoring the impact of the Habagat, particularly the situation in flood-prone areas and the rising water levels in dams and reservoirs. He has directed concerned agencies to remain on heightened alert, closely coordinate on water releases, and take the necessary preventive measures to protect communities and critical infrastructure,” said Presidential Communications Office Undersecretary and Palace press officer Claire Castro.
Castro said several dams in Central Luzon are spilling water, but their water levels are being closely monitored and managed.
“The President will continue to monitor the situation and ensure that government agencies are ready to respond as conditions develop,” she added.
As of Sunday, Aug. 9, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said more than 382,000 people in eight regions had been affected by the Habagat.IMT
