Improved destination management, visitor facilities, and environmental protection are among the requirements being assessed in three tourism destinations in Northern Iloilo seeking possible inclusion in Western Visayas’ Regional Ecotourism Circuit.
The Department of Tourism (DOT-6), together with the Regional Ecotourism Committee (REC-6), conducted site validation and assessment in Sitio Nagpana in Barotac Viejo, Pan de Azucar Island in Concepcion, and Isla Gigantes in Carles.
The inspections aim to determine whether the destinations comply with existing laws and ecotourism standards and are ready for sustainable tourism development.
During consultations following the site inspections, the assessment team discussed its findings with local stakeholders and provided technical recommendations, particularly on destination management, tourist reception and environmental protection.
Sites that meet the prescribed standards and secure REC-6 approval may qualify for inclusion in the Regional Ecotourism Circuit, which will guide the promotion and marketing of recognized destinations.
Inclusion may also provide opportunities for additional support to improve their tourism facilities and development initiatives.
The assessment forms part of efforts to ensure that tourism promotion is matched by proper destination management, adequate visitor facilities and safeguards for the natural environment.IMT
