Malacañang said it will seek an update from the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) on the proposed bridge connecting Aklan to Boracay Island.
At a press briefing, Palace Press Officer Claire Castro said President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has been informed of the proposal, but no approval has been issued so far.
“Nabalitaan na po natin, nabalitaan na po ng Pangulo ang nangyayari dito at sa ngayon po, pinamamahala muna kay DPWH Secretary Vince Dizon,” Castro said.
Castro said the Palace is awaiting further details from the DPWH.
“Hihingi po tayo ng update patungkol po dito (We will ask for an update regarding this),” she said.
The proposed bridge aims to improve connectivity between the mainland province of Aklan and the island resort of Boracay, one of the country’s top tourist destinations.
When asked if the project has already been approved, Castro said it is too early to say.
“Hindi po masasabi sa ngayon (It cannot be determined at this time),” Castro said.
The project, which will be implemented under a Build-Operate-Transfer scheme, includes a 2.54-kilometer bridge with access for public transport, pedestrian lanes, bikeways, and utilities.
San Miguel Holdings Corporation initiated the Boracay Bridge Project by submitting an unsolicited proposal to the DPWH on Feb. 14, 2018.
However, the proposed infrastructure development has faced criticism for potential environmental damage and economic impacts, including the displacement of boatmen and port workers.
The project’s approval and implementation have sparked opposition from stakeholders and the local population.IMT
