Presidential Communications Office Secretary Lino Cayetano said the Marcos administration wants a working relationship with the media built on cooperation, not fear, while recognizing the press’s role in questioning government policies and holding officials accountable.
“We don’t want a climate of fear. We want a climate of cooperation,” Cayetano said.
“Engagement with the media is crucial. Even a critical media is an essential part of a healthy democracy.”
Cayetano made the remarks after meeting informally with the Malacañang Press Corps on Friday to discuss the PCO’s plans and its relationship with journalists.
He urged reporters to continue asking tough questions and scrutinizing government work, saying critical coverage helps improve public service and keeps officials accountable.
Cayetano also encouraged the press to look beyond political disputes and catchy headlines and focus on issues that directly affect Filipinos.
“Our appeal is simple: let’s talk about what truly affects people’s lives. Scrutinize the President’s policies, programs and projects. Ask how they work and whether they deliver. And help us explain to the Filipino people how these programs help them. That is the heart of development communication, and we can only do it together with the press,” he said.
Cayetano also outlined changes under the PCO’s ongoing reorganization, saying the agency’s priority should remain explaining the administration’s work to the public.
“We all serve at the pleasure of the President. What matters is that PCO fulfills its mandate: to explain to the Filipino people what this government is doing to make their lives better,” he said.
Under the reorganization, Undersecretary Claire Castro will remain presidential spokesperson while taking on a new role within the PCO.
The office also plans to expand face-to-face engagements in universities and campuses, hold regular feedback sessions with the Malacañang Press Corps and give journalists greater access to Cabinet members.
The Malacañang press briefing room will also be used more actively to explain the President’s message directly to the public.
Cayetano said the PCO would continue to explain and defend the administration’s agenda while upholding transparency, accountability and open engagement with the media.IMT
