The Senate has approved on third and final reading a bill declaring the Waling-waling (Vanda sanderiana) as the National Orchid of the Philippines.

Principal sponsor Senator Loren Legarda said the measure seeks to recognize the flower’s rarity, beauty, and cultural significance.

Known as the “Queen of Philippine Orchids,” the Waling-waling is endemic to parts of Mindanao, particularly Davao, Cotabato, and Zamboanga.

Legarda warned that the species remains under threat from deforestation, habitat loss, illegal harvesting, and climate change.

Under the bill, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources will lead conservation efforts, while the National Museum will help preserve and promote the orchid’s scientific and cultural importance.IMT
