The local government of Tigbauan, Iloilo, has suspended the operations of a poultry farm tied to persistent foul odors and fly infestations.

The temporary closure of GT Poultry Farm in Barangay Sipitan was ordered by Mayor Virgilio Teruel due to “mounting complaints and sanitary issues.”

Based on the suspension order issued on Aug. 28, the farm has yet to comply with mitigation measures recommended by the Environmental Management Bureau (EMB).

Teruel said the farm will only be allowed to resume operations if it secures certifications from the EMB and the Composite Team of the local government.

Obtaining an EMB clearance, according to the mayor, demonstrates that the poultry farm meets all local sanitation and environmental standards.

Teruel also directed the poultry farm operator to address the legal conflicts involving officials and residents from the neighboring barangay of Linobayan.

In a statement following the issuance of the order, the barangay officials of Linobayan said: “This is only a suspension—not a solution. We continue to appeal for the PERMANENT CLOSURE of the poultry farm.”

”Our community deserves a lasting solution, not temporary relief from a problem that continues to affect the health, comfort, and well-being of our residents,” they added.

The officials emphasized that they will remain united in voicing their concerns until they are fully addressed, asserting that public health and welfare must remain the top priority.

It can be recalled that all Barangay Linobayan officials submitted their resignation letters to Teruel in protest over the local government’s alleged inaction regarding the problem.IMT
