Iloilo City Mayor Raisa Treñas has ordered the preparation of contingency plans for a possible strong to very strong El Niño, warning that its effects could extend beyond water shortages to electricity, food supply, health and the local economy.
Treñas called an emergency meeting with response cluster heads after receiving the findings of a scientific forum held last week. The city is preparing for three possible scenarios, with concerned offices tasked to identify measures for each situation.
“Indi na pwede nga response na lang ang aton himuon. We have to prepare now,” she said in a Facebook post.
Treñas said the city could not afford to wait for conditions to worsen before acting, as the government must be ready to continue providing services to residents even if the weather phenomenon hits hard.
The city is also looking at possible effects on its water sources, including the Maasin Watershed and Jalaur River, while preparing measures for vulnerable communities, schools and outdoor workers.
The contingency plans cover water conservation, food security, health services, energy conservation, critical infrastructure and public safety, among other concerns.
The city government is coordinating with PAGASA, scientific experts, water providers and other concerned agencies to monitor developments and update its preparations.IMT
