Senator Alan Peter Cayetano and eight other senators have asked the Supreme Court to nullify the Senate’s June 3 session, saying it was held without a valid quorum and led to a change in leadership.

They also want the High Court to stop Senator Sherwin Gatchalian’s bloc from exercising authority based on the officers and committees elected during the session.

The June 3 session saw 12 senators declare a quorum, vacate all leadership posts, and elect new officials, including Gatchalian as Senate President Pro Tempore and acting Senate President.

The group is asking the SC to restore the previous Senate setup and void all actions taken during the session, including changes to committee posts and impeachment rules.

In their petition, they cited a “clear violation of the Constitution.”

Cayetano said the case involves constitutional issues and the Senate’s independence.

“It is about ensuring that constitutional questions are settled by law rather than by political expediency. Most importantly, it is about protecting the ability of the Senate to pursue the truth wherever it leads,” he said.

Gatchalian’s camp defended the session, saying the 12 senators present were enough to form a quorum.IMT
