Senator Jinggoy Estrada was taken to the New Quezon City Jail in Payatas on Monday, June 1, after the Sandiganbayan ordered his arrest in connection with a non-bailable plunder case.

The Sandiganbayan Fifth Division issued arrest warrants against Estrada and his co-accused and ordered their detention at the Payatas facility.

Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla said Estrada was arrested at the Senate and informed of his Miranda rights.

Estrada, however, maintained that he voluntarily surrendered to authorities.

Before being taken into custody, the senator said he would not seek Senate custody and would instead face the charges against him.

Estrada also claimed that he had been offered a way out of the case in exchange for leaving the “independent majority bloc,” but said he rejected the offer.

He is also facing a graft case, for which he earlier posted bail.IMT
