The Senate has approved on third and final reading a bill declaring the Waling-waling as the National Orchid of the Philippines.

Sen. Loren Legarda said the measure aims to strengthen protection and conservation efforts for one of the country’s most iconic endemic species.

Known as the “Queen of Philippine Orchids,” the Waling-waling continues to face threats from deforestation, illegal logging, habitat loss and climate change.

Under the bill, the DENR will lead conservation efforts while the National Museum will promote its scientific and cultural significance.

Legarda stressed that the measure does not replace the Sampaguita as the national flower but recognizes the Waling-waling as a separate national symbol.IMT
