President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio have reaffirmed the Philippines’ alliance with the United States, with both officials committing to expand cooperation on defense, trade, energy, food security, artificial intelligence, and regional security.
During Rubio’s courtesy call in Malacañang, Marcos thanked Washington for its continued support, including its backing of the Philippines in the West Philippine Sea, as the two countries mark 80 years of diplomatic ties and the 75th anniversary of their alliance.
“We can continue to build on the longstanding relations between them, particularly in addressing various issues such as peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific, trade and business cooperation, and disaster response,” Marcos said.
Rubio, who is in Manila for the ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, also praised the Philippines for hosting the 2026 ASEAN Summit and reaffirmed America’s commitment to its treaty ally.
“This is a country that has deep ties with the United States for many, many years. And it’s a partnership that is only growing. And in light of recent events, I think more important than ever. And so we’re glad to be with you here today and to reaffirm that relationship and our commitment to the U.S.-Philippines relationship,” Rubio said.IMT
